This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Fountain of Youth Summit, which can be found at http://fountainofyouthworldsummit.com. In this excerpt, Danny Dreyer shares his views on eating right and listening to your body. The Fountain of Youth World Summit with Danny Dreyer, author of ChiWalking and ChiRunning.Kevin: What does eating right mean to you?Danny: I am mostly on organic diet. We cook everything from scratch. We don’t eat out of boxes or cans. I only eat meat about once a month. I mean, I will have – - that’s like red meat. I don’t drink coffee. I do drink tea but not an over abundance of it. And – -Kevin: What about for training?Danny: Oh, the training is really fun, you know on our break, we break part nutrition and diet as related to training so you know, what I do is that when I am going out for a really long run I want to have a lot of good carbohydrates in my system before I do that. It’s just like [pumping] for a race and not a run. And so usually I have beans and rice and peas – -Kevin: OK.Danny: the night before I run because it just burns really clean and even though it’s a complete protein and also a very good cover meal. And because I don’t eat pasta as a carbohydrate meal in fact I rarely eat pasta anyway. We have a law here. We don’t eat anything white.Kevin: OK. [laughter]Danny: Unless it’s yogurt.Kevin: Got you.Danny: So you want to eat a good carbohydrate before a long workout and you want to eat a really good protein meal afterwards along with the carbohydrate and sometimes during the week you always want to eat a really healthy salad like really leafy green lots of colors.Kevin: OK.Danny: And other than that we eat a lot of green vegetable meals. I also eat most of my meals out of a bowl, and my bowl only holds two and a half cups and when it’s full it’s full, when I sit down and that’s what I eat.Kevin: That’s interesting.Danny: Yeah that way I don’t ever overeat and it doesn’t matter what’s in that bowl I just don’t eat more than that.Kevin: So how big is it?Danny: Two and a half cups might be two and three quarters.Kevin: OK. When you pile it up?Danny: Pile it up, OK salads a little lighter I might pile a little higher but you know for most meals I level to the top. And then I eat two meals a day, I don’t eat three. You know I learnt something for the Europeans. They just eat the right amount. A lot of people there have taken on some of our bad habits but a lot of people in Asia especially and also in Europe are just the right body size. Because they just eat, when they are done they’re done.Kevin: Yeah.Danny: And a lot, the other thing that I do is, it’s a hotsy question what do I do to stay in shape? One is I run about every other day or walk and I am not afraid to stop my running and start walking at any point.Kevin: I think that’s a fantastic point right there.Danny: Yeah, I am not a fanatic. Yeah, I wrote the books on running or walking but I am not a fanatic of either one. Here’s one thing I do when I get across to people and what we’re trying to do is this whole thing about having to being mindful about when you’re walking and running,Kevin: Um.Danny: Like always doing the right thing, is that we really are on a campaign to change running and walking from a fitness regiment to a practice and if you think of what you do as a practice, you know, there is Tai-chi is a practice, Yoga is a practice, Polaris is like a practice, Meditation is a practice. All those things are practice and nobody really thinks about approaching their running or walking as a practice. Because if you did then everytime you went out to do it there would be something you’re working on to get just a little better, just a little looser, just a little most grounded or centered or relaxed or there is always something to work on to get just a little bit better. And you end up becoming a better person through your practice of walking and not just get stronger muscles and a great heart.Kevin: Right.Danny: It’s more about a holistic approach to whatever fitness thing you are doing.Kevin: It’s actually the value of it.Danny: That’s the value of it. That’s why it’s so cool because it’s not just a fitness thing. So people go “how do you stay fit”, well I don’t just use my body. I use my mind.Kevin: Yeah.Danny: You know, you just have to use both. Otherwise it’s not complete. You are imbalanced. So there’s a lot of jokes out there that really, you know, that’s why people get to mind over body. They don’t really listen to their body as well as they could. We have a principle called ‘body sensing’, its one of the Chi skills.Kevin: Um.Danny: ‘Body sensing’ is just learning how to listen to your body, how to direct it with your mind but how to really sense when it needs something, when it doesn’t need something. When something is right, when it’s not right, when you’re imbalanced when you are balanced, and if people were much more in their bodies we wouldn’t be near the disease rate, cancer rate, obesity rate anything that’s going on in the society today if people just learnt to listen what the body is trying to tell them.Kevin: So how does somebody when they’re walking or running, how do they start to feel their body? Obviously sometimes they feel it, you know, but the body does not give them an option well – -Danny: Yeah, you know if you are feeling, I will tell you this, it’s really simple. If you feel any discomfort in your body. Well, it starts with tension. If you feel tension then your body that’s not discomfort ness there, it’s just tense.Kevin: Um.Danny: So if you feel tension in your body, what I do is when you’re walking or running just do what I call a body sweep. When you start at the top of your head and just scan all the way down to your body top to bottom and if you feel just looking for any tension like you’re your own MRI, you just looking for tension anywhere head to toe, if you find any try to see if you can how to let go of that, how to just relax that part, how to breathe into it, give it a little more range of emotion to stretch it out or something, but listen to your body and just start the practice of just listening, just scanning. And then once you get good at scanning and listening then you want to know what you are listening for. And so first you are listening to tension, that’s the first, the lowest level.Kevin: Um.Danny: And then listen for discomfort. If the tension goes on long enough your body is going to start talking a little louder if you don’t start doing something.Kevin: Um.Danny: Right. And then discomfort turns to pain. Because if you don’t listen to discomfort it’s not going to get better, it’s going to get worse. And your body will start screaming, “Hey wake up, we’re hurting down here. What you going to do about it?” And then if you don’t listen to pain it’s usually either illness or injury. And it’s the people that you know just keep going no matter what the body is telling them; they end up with in the last two categories. So it’s really training to have a mindful practice that you’re always listening to your body and trying to co-operate with it and work with it, and say how can we do this better, you know how can we feel better, how can we eat better, how can we stop when we are supposed to. It’s a fabulous way to go through life listening to your body and instead of listening to what everybody else is trying to tell you what to do with your body.Kevin: Absolutely. And you had a statistic that you told me once about runners and the average length that they run. Is that, do you recall what that was?Danny: There’s a statistic that you know out of all runners, at least there’s a study done in the United States and that was couple of years ago when there was 22 million people that called themselves regular runners. There’s a 65 percent injury rate.Kevin: Really?Danny: Every year 65 percent of 22 million people get injured long enough to disrupt their training program. That’s like you’re sure of two out of three chances of getting injured if you start running unless you are doing it right. So what we tell people, it is not running that hurts your body, it’s the way you
run. Its not walking that hurts your body, its the way you walk. And so if you are constantly mindful of studying how you move your body, then you are much much less likely, completely reduce your chances of injury or even discomfort, and so you get to a point where you can do your fitness program and feel great the whole way, the whole day, the next time you do it. It always feels great. And there’s no downtime.Kevin: Now is there one thing you recommend someone do, what is it?Danny: Move your body.Kevin: Yeah?Danny: Yeah. It’s got to be it. My Tai-chi says that when you stop moving your spine you start dying, that’s it. Period! You sitting on your couch watching TV, you are not moving your body you’re going to start dying. And so that’s why you got to get your Chi moving through your body. That means every time you move your body you’re activating your Chi moving through your body. The more relaxed you are, the easier it flows through your body. When you get outdoors there’s tons of Chi outdoors that your body can absorb through your eyes, through your skin, you know, and you’re gaining energy and you want to really be working at always gaining energy and it’s really your movement. And you know, unfortunately there is a large emphasis nowadays on the intellectual center. Anybody who wants to get ahead, you know, work hard and go to college and do all that and not forgetting that they have a body that also it’s the reason why you are in the planet. If you didn’t have it you wouldn’t be here. You got to take care of that as well as your mind. The mind isn’t everything. No. It tends to feed the brain too much I pod, the MP3 players, Videos, Computers, name it , it’s all brain stuff. So for as much as I am in front of the computer writing everyday whatever, I get outside move around, you know. You got to move your body. If I could say one thing, you know, and eat right.

This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Fountain of Youth Summit, which can be found at fountainofyouthworldsummit.com. In this excerpt, Phoenix Gilman shares on maintaining serotonin levels in ADD, ADHD and weight loss. The Fountain of Youth World Summit with Phoenix Gilman, the author of “Diet Failure – The Naked Truth About Weight Loss.” PHOENIX: This whole thing with ADD, ADHD, if people and the parents and everyone were to come to understand that everything we put in our body obviously affects us physically, but to understand that it also affects us mentally and emotionally, our ability to concentrate, this whole ADD, ADHD, well no wonder most of these kids are bouncing off the walls and can’t focus. One, we have to remember what it was like to be a child, first of all. That to me is so important. That child has so much energy that should not be harnessed with a drug. If parents were to understand that everything that they put in their child’s diet, even though they probably think, I’m sure they think they’re doing right with the low fat milk and the cereals and all that, and the bagels. But all those foods are all very high GI. And the juices and things like that and of course, what kid doesn’t enjoy a Red Bull which is nothing but caffeine and sugar. All those things deplete that brain chemical which, among many things, will lead to more cravings, more binge eating and the so-called ADD, ADHD.KEVIN: Yeah.PHOENIX: So, just by understanding what a healthy diet will help tremendously in that child being able to focus and to lose the weight and to be a much healthier child without having to drug them with, you know, sort of Ritalin or Strattera.KEVIN: Sure. And with kids, if we can move into that just for a little bit…PHOENIX: A-ha.KEVIN: …I mean, kids like chicken fingers and french fries and ketchup. I mean, how do you get them to, as a parent…PHOENIX: Yeah.KEVIN: …what does a parent do to get them to eat a healthier diet?PHOENIX: Well, that’s another excellent question because I talk about it in the book saying, you know, I wrote the book in a dialogue form to one, to give a voice directly to the consumer. And so, the woman says to me, “Well, you can eat like that because you don’t have children. I have children.” And I wanted to put that out there, because I do understand that it is, when you have kids, that’s a whole another thing. I don’t have to worry about anyone, it’s just me. However, there is no better time to help your child than now and he is a child. They might not like it right away, but you can do it slowly. There are things that you can just start to incorporate. I mean, most kids like eggs. You can start instead of giving them breakfast cereal every morning.KEVIN: A-ha.PHOENIX: You know, Hot Pockets and Pop-Tarts and things like that. Slowly start to put other healthier things in there. And the dietary supplements as well, Kevin, that are crucial to be able to maintain that brain chemical so you can maintain on this healthy way of living and eating, is even though in our industry we have to … those standard claims, keep away from children. However, if I had a child, knowing how safe it is, I would have them on this product that they could then, because that is the most important thing for me, to maintain that brain chemical so I can get on with my life and do the things that I need to do and staying and eating healthy is the most important thing. So, that would be a good place to start to also then really educate yourself to know what’s healthy, start there and then also get on that supplement.
Because that’s the key. That’s the key. Again, all diets, generally ninety-eight percent of all diets fail unless you understand how to maintain that serotonin. And so that’s really the missing link for any of the diets that are out there.KEVIN: Right. And you talked about supplements a little bit. What are some of the ingredients in a healthy supplement regimen?PHOENIX: A-ha. Well, for me, I don’t really get too much into, my key focus, as I said, is to help maintain serotonin.KEVIN: Yeah.PHOENIX: I have my own personal thing. I mean, I’m not really big and overloading on supplements even though I’m in the industry. I could be taking twenty or thirty a day based on what the reports say that you need. I try to get as much as I can naturally through my food. I’ll take a good multiple vitamins and minerals ……KEVIN: A-ha.PHOENIX: I take an extra E and B. And other than that, the most important one for me, if I only had to take one, it would not be any of those, it would be the product that will elevate my serotonin. And the ones that I recommend in my book, I don’t promote my products in my book even though I spent four years developing supplements to prove these theories, that I had read, the clinical theories, it is about sharing those products and the supplements that people can go in any health food store and get. And by far, the one that is the favorite of mine and has the most wonderful studies to support and what I have used in all my products in the last seven years, is called 5HTP, 5 hydroxytryptophan.KEVIN: OK. Tryptophans, OK.PHOENIX: Yeah. And there’s other ones that I list but that is by far the best, and they could be picked up, as they say, it’s great. Because why? It’s safe, it’s affordable, it’s effective, extremely effective and no prescription required.KEVIN: Wow. That’s interesting. And what does it do chemically?PHOENIX: Well, actually the 5 is an amino, it’s a natural amino acid, it’s found from the Griffonia seed, a plant out of Africa, South Africa.KEVIN: A-ha.PHOENIX: And it is the closest thing to serotonin. It crosses… it’s easily…to cross the blood-brain barrier, which the blood-brain barrier is very, very protective for obvious reasons. From anything that can go in there. But the 5 has what I like to call, the “Key” to quickly get across that barrier. And so, once it gets in across the blood-brain barrier, it transforms into serotonin, thereby elevating this brain chemical.KEVIN: Wow.PHOENIX: And unlike any diet that anyone’s been on in the past, Kevin, I always say, you know, “What do we think about it especially women when we’re on a diet?” We think about all the foods we can’t wait to eat once we get down to that perfect size.KEVIN: Yeah, it’s true.PHOENIX: And so, and plus, diets are associated with starvation, deprivation and frustration. And eventually, we end up with our head in the bag for whatever it is we crave. Because, not knowing that what’s driving us to consume those things is this brain chemical depleted. So, unlike any diet that anyone’s been on, whether you’re trying to lose weight, whether you want to help alleviate depression or ADD or help lower your risk for heart disease, cancer, all those things, it is absolutely imperative to be able to maintain it. And to maintain it with a safe effective dietary supplement, Kevin. Once you’re able to maintain that brain chemical, the most amazing thing happens and that is, you will no longer be driven to consume those things. You could have those foods, those trigger items, those comfort foods that you thought you couldn’t live without, you could have them right in front of you and you would no longer want them. Why? Because the brain is now satiated. It’s content. It has no need, no desire to push you for those things. And that is what makes this work long-term. Because what happens when you maintain the serotonin, you subsequently stabilize the insulin. You’re no longer consuming the food and/or beverages that constantly trigger the insulin, making the body store more fat, more fat, leaves depression, more cravings, all the issues that will come to a cycle you now start to stabilize the body. The body starts to burn its own stored fat instead of constantly triggering it, and that is the crucial long-term link.KEVIN: Wow. It sounds just fantastic to be able to have that power.PHOENIX: A-ha. It is. Absolutely. That’s why I have so many wonderful testimonials. People say, “Look, for the first time in my life, I’m not driven to consume those.” They just simply lose the desire. And a lo
t of people say, “Oh, you know, I just found new willpower.” I said, “I don’t care what you want to call it as long as it’s working.”KEVIN: Yeah.PHOENIX: What it is is just simply, because it happens within your own head, it really is. It feels like, “Wow, I finally got it.” But it’s nothing more, you know, not to take away, it’s powerful but it’s simply nothing more than you finally understanding how to safely maintain that neurotransmitter.KEVIN: Wow. You just mentioned testimonials. Why don’t you share with us, you know, a story or two about how, you know, this has worked for the people you worked with.PHOENIX: There’s two I’d love to share. There’s one, it’s so emotional, though, it was a woman I was doing a show out at Minnesota and I do that really early in the morning and she wrote me and she said, “I heard you one cold wintry morning on WCCO and I almost drove off the road in shock of how you could know what I struggled with all my life with food addiction, carb addiction, never being able to keep the weight off. I felt like such a failure.” Anyway, this woman went on to lose forty-five pounds in about four months, which is a nice, steady pace, not too quick…KEVIN: Yeah.PHOENIX: …which I tell my clients, “Look, I will never tell you you’re going to lose thirty pounds in thirty days. I’m not even going to tell you you’re going to lose fifteen pounds in thirty days. This is about coming to understand the long-term solution, and to how far you want to take it, if you add in working out, doing some weight training to help build that lean muscle mass, you could take it probably a little quicker but it is, for me, always about long-term.” But anyway, that woman with a huge…she was a binge eater for her whole life. She was about my age, forty-seven at the time. And she just could not control it. She said, “I felt like such a failure.” Having lost the forty-five pounds, she had kept it off for a year, which is a huge success, because sometimes, like people say, “Oh, I can lose the weight. It’s keeping it off that’s an issue.” So, most of the people that I have now, the book has been out a year, these people have maintained that. And she says now, she says, “You know Phoenix, it is so wonderful to finally be able to go out to dinner with my two boys, enjoy a meal, have a nice piece of pie without wanting to eat the entire pie.”

Expert Says RP Poised for Huge Gains in Medical Tourism

MANILA, Philippines – Medical tourism in the Philippines is quietly but surely bringing benefits into the country—but not only in terms of revenues. A look at the big picture shows that the benefits are larger, more substantial and more long-term than what can be quantified simply in financial terms. Sadly, this big picture is what some critics of medical tourism miss.

It’s undeniable that medical tourism will bring additional revenue to the Philippine economy—after all, it is projected to be a $188 billion industry by 2013 as more and more people seek quality healthcare overseas. The Philippine government estimates that medical tourism could bring in as much as $3 billion into the economy in the next three years.

And yes, the direct beneficiaries of these added revenues are the country’s hospitals and medical professionals including doctors, nurses, etc. The advantages, however, don’t just stop there. As more and more overseas patients–whether Filipino-Americans and others of Filipino descent, or foreign tourists–come in for health services in the Philippines, it will create a domino effect that would result in, essentially, better healthcare for everybody.

International accreditation

Today there are three hospitals in the Philippines that are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI); these are the medical City in Pasig, Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu, and St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. As more and more hospitals strive to achieve international accreditation as part of medical tourism, these hospitals will need to upgrade their systems, services and personnel as well.

“Accreditation agencies enhance the quality of care by providing quality standards and measuring hospital performance against these benchmarks.  As Philippines embarks on the business of medical tourism, more and more reputed international accrediting bodies like NABH of India will have their presence in the country.  These accreditations will improve the overall quality of healthcare delivery, not only for the foreign patients, but for the local Filipino patients too,” said Dr. Sanjiv Malik, Honorary Chairman of IMWell Summit.

As medical tourism thrives, the benchmark for healthcare across hospitals and wellness centers will also be higher thus improving the quality of healthcare in the country.

More knowledge, technology transfers

As medical facilities upgrade their standards, it’s inevitable that Filipino physicians, nurses and other professionals will also need to increase their skills, knowledge and competence leading to continuous knowledge enhancement momentum. Such a transfer of knowledge and technology is one of the effects of globalization—which is what medical tourism is: the globalization of healthcare.

More jobs, reduction and reversal of “brain-drain”

There are 1,723 hospitals in the country with a total bed capacity of about 95,000. And yet, the Philippines is unable to stop the exodus of nurses and doctors who choose to work abroad for higher pay.

“medical tourism will create new jobs and enhance the working conditions to reduce and reverse the brain drain of Filipino healthcare professionals,” continues Dr. Malik.

It is estimated that employment in the health and wellness sector has increased by 13.2% from 2003 to 2005, numbering to around 238,955 employees.

“A thriving medical tourism sector in the Philippines, in turn, will also create more businesses—not only in the healthcare industry but also in other sectors like wellness, hospitality, travel and tourism,” said Joyce Alumno, Conference Director and also Secretary General of HEAL Philippines.

Related businesses that will benefit from medical tourism include travel agencies; healthcare concierge services; hotels, resorts and spas; vehicle rentals; and even the local souvenir shops and food stalls that will serve medical tourists at the Philippine destinations where they spend their recovery time.

“It’s unrealistic to say that medical tourism is the one shot solution to all the problems of healthcare in the Philippines. However, medical tourism will facilitate and enhance the speed of healthcare reforms in the country,” ended Dr. Sanjiv Malik.
